Father Robert Barron Appointed Rector of Mundelein Seminary today by the Archbishop of Chicago

From: Word on Fire

Fr. Robert Barron

The Archbishop of Chicago, Francis Cardinal George, announced today Father Robert Barron has been appointed Rector-President of Mundelein Seminary/University of St. Mary of the Lake. Father Barron will assume this role in July at the seminary located outside Chicago.

“As a priest of Jesus Christ I accept this responsibility with joy,” said Father Barron. “The appointment brings together many of the elements that have long been of great importance to me, namely, the priesthood, theological scholarship, pastoral care and evangelization.”
Barron is currently the Director of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, a media group he founded to advance the new evangelization. He will continue in this role and its mission, along with his new appointment at Mundelein. Last year, Word on Fire released a 10 part documentary series, Catholicism, which Father Barron created, wrote and hosted. The series aired across the country on PBS and EWTN, and has been seen in parishes, universities and schools throughout the world. The documentary also won a Christopher Award for excellence.

The New Media and the Church: Here Comes Everybody

From the National Catholic Register:

The Church and New Media: Blogging Converts, Online Activists and Bishops Who Tweet has an implicit message that reminds me of the comment sometimes attributed to James Joyce — that the Catholic Church means “Here comes everybody.” Not just the Vatican, not just the bishops, not just the parish council, but everyone — for better and for worse.

And the blogosphere, increasingly, is everybody, too. Like nothing that I can think of in Church history, the blogosphere allows faithful Catholics to find each other for reciprocal inspiration, support, exchange and development of thought, sheer fellowship and for who knows what other purpose added in the last 24 hours.

As The Church and the New Media’s editor, Brandon Vogt, puts it, “a primary, defining characteristic of all new media is dialogue,” in sharp contract to the top-down format of print and film and, to a much lesser degree, radio.

One of the most compelling contributions in this book comes from Father Robert Barron (who we’ve interviewed for the Register; we have also featured his essays in print and online), who uses his website to podcast well-reasoned defenses of Catholicism. His chapter outlines the main anti-Catholic and anti-Christian arguments he encounters and could serve as a stand-alone primer in apologetics.

New Roman Missal for High School Teens

This is an excellent explanation of the New Roman Missal, and not just for teens. I especially liked the diagrams that showed everyone who had to review the new missal before it was finally approved:

Vocation Video Surpasses 10,000 Views

From Order of Preachers Vocations

It was the largest class of Novices in 44 years:

Last year we made this vocation video from St. Gertrude Church and Priory where our novitiate is located. It is called “Leaving All Things Behind.”  This YouTube version has just exceeded 10,000 views.  Between YouTube, Vimeo and GloriaTV, it seems we have almost 20,000 views. Thanks be to God!

Rite of Election

I went to an amazing Rite of Election last night at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More. There are so many parishes in the Arlington Diocese that they have half the RCIA classes come on Saturday and the other half come on Sunday. As it was, we had an incredibly full house on Saturday night — standing room only:

Father Barron on the Importance of Joy in Evangelization

This is an excellent video by Father Barron on the importance of joy in evangelization:

I think he is 100% correct. It is the joyful people we are drawn to in RCIA class, in the pews at church, and the people we meet every day.

Eduardo Verastegui Predicts End of Abortion in America

from the National Catholic Register:

Eduardo Verastegui

Eduardo Verastegui was a popular Mexican soap star until he went through his own metanoia, or conversion, and realized he wanted to work for the Pro-Life movement both in Mexico and the United States:

Former Mexican soap-opera-star-turned-pro-life-activist Eduardo Verasteguitold a crowd of more than 500 that he thinks abortion in the U.S. will one day come to an end.

“I think we will see regeneration and the end of abortion in this country,” he said at a sold-out Jan. 26 fundraiser for Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in  Denver.

Verastegui gave his testimony about growing up in a pro-life country and  eventually seeing Mexico City legalize abortion.

“Pro-choice, pro-life, all that; all those terms in Mexico didn’t exist until  a few years ago, when Mexico City passed that horrible law.”

Although abortion was legalized in Mexico City in 2007, 19 states have since  passed constitutional amendments establishing the right to life for all, at the  moment of conception. Once a total of 25 states pass similar amendments, the  ruling in Mexico City can be overturned to reflect the majority.

“It was defined in our hearts, in all the Catholics in Mexico, but it was not  defined in the constitution,” Verastegui said.

He also spoke about his passion for the pro-life movement and his recent  opening of Guadalupe Medical Center in Los Angeles. He called the center an “oasis of life” in a “desert of death” because of its location near 10 abortion  facilities.

Verastegui said that the goal of his center is “to save the most important  thing that God loves the most,” which is “to create human life.”

“The most amazing part is when they enter this place they don’t feel alone  anymore because there are so many volunteers, so many people just hugging  them.”

Website for New Personal Ordinariate Launches

From the website:

The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter

On January 1, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI established the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter for those groups of Anglicans in the United States who seek to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. This is the second Ordinariate created in light of the apostolic constitution Anglicanorum coetibus, the first having been created for England and Wales on Jan. 15, 2011. The Pope’s gracious response represents an important and exciting new step along the difficult path toward Christian unity.
